For this reason, some paint brands have been marketing the so-called “ecological paints” for years. These products are composed of raw materials of vegetable and/or mineral origin that do not pollute either in their production or in their application. In addition, specific paints and varnishes are manufactured for people with allergy problems. To distinguish them, you have to look for the European Ecolabel, which guarantees the absence of toxic substances.

Breathability

The operation of these paints is simple. They create a porous layer through which the walls transpire. Thanks to this feature, water vapour and moisture are evacuated to the outside without impediment and no condensation forms between the paint layer and the surface of the substrate. By keeping the partitions dry and breathable, the formation of fungi and bacteria is prevented, which guarantees more hygienic walls and a longer duration of the paint in good condition.

In relation to wood

Wood is a living element. When it requires moisture, it absorbs it from the environment and when it has too much, it expels it back outside. In addition, depending on the temperature, it experiences contraction and expansion movements. Due to these characteristics, protective treatments of wood must allow it to develop its regulatory functions. Something that does not happen with synthetic varnishes and protectors. When applied to wood, these products create a surface layer that completely isolates it from the outside.

3 types of natural paints/finishes

Silicate-based paints: These are usually obtained through a recycled glass melting process. Their most remarkable feature is their resistance, which makes them suitable for outdoor and indoor use, and although their composition has evolved, there are facades that are still painted with silicate paint since the end of the nineteenth century. They are also absolutely waterproof, which makes them suitable for bathrooms and kitchens, and at the same time breathable so that the natural flow of water vapor is not restricted.

Lime-based paints: It is usually composed of powdered liming obtained by mixing hydraulic lime and natural non-organic additives . It is a paint suitable especially for interiors, although it is also used for exteriors in the case of restorations. It provides a high purity white and allows the addition of specific natural non-organic pigments, to obtain a wide palette of colour. It is totally breathable, aseptic, bactericidal and fungicidal.

Clay-based paints: From their name, the tendency is to imagine them brown or ochre, but as they are composed mainly of natural white clay , marble sands and vegetable casein, their characteristic color is white. Of course, it supports the addition of mineral pigments to obtain the desired color palette. Its most suitable use is indoors and as a curiosity, it allows the addition of natural aromas .

Ecological paints are composed of natural raw materials, do not pollute in their production and are suitable for people with allergy problems.
