A pigment is a material that changes the colour of the light it reflects or transmits as a result of the selective absorption of light according to its wavelength (which is the parameter that determines colour).
Put more simply, they are a fine colouring powder that gives a specific colour to the medium into which they are placed, without dissolving in it.
They may be natural or synthetic in nature.
There are two types of natural pigment: organic and inorganic. Organic pigments come from plants and animals. Inorganic pigments are made from earths and minerals. Depending on their origin, they are extracted by different methods.
Today, a great many synthetic organic pigments are produced and used, made from carbon compounds.
Inorganic pigments (of mineral origin) are metallic compounds, oxides for example, and natural earths. Compared with organic pigments, there are far fewer of them. Examples of inorganic pigments of natural origin are umber, ochres and siennas, which are dug from the earth.
So-called mineral pigments are pigments made from harvested natural mineral, after crushing, grinding, rinsing and other processes. Also known as "stone colour", their colour quality is relatively stable.
Pigments are usually added to mortars or coatings beforehand, in the mixing water, or in the case of lime putty, once it is sufficiently fluid.
In the case of oxides or earths, the percentage should not, as a general rule, exceed 10% of the amount of binder (lime, gypsum and so on) in the mix.
