Natural wood solutions based on oils and waxes: good for people and good for wood.
Wood is a natural material. Its cell structure, similar to our skin, can take up or release moisture, which means that wood breathes. Oil penetrates the surface of the wood and protects it from within. The wood stays beautiful and elastic for ever.
The waxes we use are classified as food safe and our pigments contain no harmful heavy metals.
We have a wide range of oils for protecting wood on floors, decking, stair treads, handrails, doors, windows, furniture, structures and other building elements, both indoors and outdoors.
Bring your wood to life and save time on maintenance.
Wood protection products based on natural oils and waxes are made up of plant oils and waxes: sunflower, linseed, soya and thistle oils, together with carnauba and candelilla waxes.
The pigments used to colour these oils and waxes are meticulously cleaned of heavy metals and are approved for use in the food industry.
The main advantages of oils and waxes are:
There are countless varieties of wood: softwoods (such as spruce, pine, larch and cedar), hardwoods (such as maple, birch, beech, oak, cherry and ash) and exotic species (such as ipe, teak, garapa and bangkirai).
The requirements placed on protection systems are equally diverse. There are various factors to consider: UV radiation, weather conditions, frequency of use and so on.
Whatever your case, Osmo has the right products for protection and durability.
UV rays are the main cause of surface degradation in wood.
UV radiation alters the lignin in the wood and makes it water soluble. Rain then washes the lignin away, so the wood turns grey and becomes brittle.
When it comes to protection against UV radiation, there are two possible systems to choose from:
Floors, furniture, windows and other items made of oil-treated wood can be cleaned simply with a damp cloth. However, we recommend avoiding conventional cleaners, as these dissolve the oils and waxes.
If the floor starts to look matt, simply refresh it with wax. This can be done in small areas, for example near doors or in high-traffic areas, with no visible transitions.
Pressure-treated wood can be coated with any of our exterior wood finishes, but it must be left to weather (exposed to the elements: sun, rain, wind and so on) for at least 6 to 8 weeks after installation, before the finish is applied. During this time, the excess treatment is washed out of the wood, leaving room in the wood for the oil finish to be absorbed.
No, this should not be done. If the existing finish is a lacquer, our finish cannot penetrate the pores of the wood and will not adhere to the surface.
Clear coatings contain no pigment. Transparent coatings can tint the wood, to a greater or lesser degree, while still allowing the texture of the wood to show through.
