Benefits of natural and ecological paints

From the beginning, humans painted caves with natural materials. These materials that were used to create natural and ecological paint evolved, becoming more and more synthetic, resistant, durable, stable, commercial… but at the same time more harmful in aspects that are very important for the future of ecology and people’s health.

Society is increasingly concerned about all the disadvantages that painting had on the market. So in the face of this demand, what we could call ecological paints with multiple benefits appears, which we will deal with in this article.

Definition of eco-friendly paint

We can define ecological paint as paint that is made with natural and biodegradable materials, which are not harmful to people, unlike synthetic paints made with chemicals.

Biodegradable ecological paints try to have the same beneficial conditions in their operation as synthetic paints, as long as the manufacture of the ecological paint is sustainable and environmentally friendly.

More information about ecological paints that is noteworthy is that they exist in several colors, including white ecological paints and black ecological paints.

Eco-friendly paints are sustainable materials that are considered absolutely necessary to createeco-friendly and sustainable spaces and for eco-design.

Ecological paints, prices and classes

Currently we can find two types of ecological paints that are differentiated by theirnatural components.

  • Natural paints: they can be of plant or animal origin (the best known are vegetable) and fall within eco-paintings.
  • Mineral paints: they can be made of ecological clay paints, silicate lime.

The price of ecological paints is usually higher than synthetic paints (more mineral than natural), however, ecological paints can be cleaned and resist longer, so over time it means savings.

For example, Ecopinttors has an eco-friendly paint can made with sunflower oil, castor beans, potato starch, and water. Which can be used for both exterior and interior, ceilings, plasterboard, plasterboard, fiberglass, cement, plaster and tinted paper. For €84.60 for the 15 kg bottle.

The Ecopinttors paint can is white, if you want to add color you must buy the natural pigments for € 5.58. Images by Ecopinttors.

Ecological paints in Spain and Latin America are marketed, although there is always the option of buying ecological paint online where we can compare prices and find a cheap ecological paint.

Benefits of eco-friendly vs. synthetic paint

Ecological paints are much better than synthetic paints, their two main benefits are derived precisely from their ecological and natural composition:

Eco-friendly paints (mineral and natural): They are not harmful to the environment because they are made with raw materials.

Synthetic paints: They use chemicals and Volatile organic compounds that harm the environment.

The synthetic paints that we are used to using are made in a totally synthetic way, with heavy materials (mercury, lead, cadmium…) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as acetone. You only need to look at the label of these products to realize that they are not very friendly to the environment and that they give off many toxins.

Eco-friendly paints are not made with harmful materials, but with raw materials of vegetable or mineral origin (silicates, lime and clay) that do not leave harmful residues.

Ecological paints (mineral and natural): They do not seriously harm health.

Synthetic paints: They harm health: respiratory tract, skin and eyes.

Synthetic paints are not only harmful to the environment due to the amount of toxins they contain, but they are also bad for people’s health: skin, respiratory tract and eyes mainly. This is due to the large amount of solvent that these paints have, since when you use it, the solvent evaporates into the environment and gives off volatile chemical residues that are not healthy at all. This process can last for days, or for months if the room has textile materials.

Ecological paints do not affect health and the only ones that give off aromas are ecological vegetable paints and mineral clay paints, their smells are not harmful and are not unpleasant but sweet, unlike what happens with synthetic paints.

There are some people who have very sensitive problems with allergies and cannot paint or stay in a place decorated with any type of paint, so if you have a business or are thinking of making one, you better use ecological paints so as not to have this kind of problem.

Eco-friendly paint on pregnancies and children is extremely important, as synthetic paints are likely to cause respiratory or allergy problems in children in the future.

Efficiency of Eco-Friendly Paints

Eco-friendly paints are not only good for health and the environment, but they also have functional efficacy, although they are not the same as synthetic paints.

Does the ecolabel indicate which are the ecological paints?

The ecolabel is a seal created by the European Union, which helps identify products and services that have a reduced environmental impact.

This is not to say that these products are totally ecological, but have reduced their toxins. This label may include synthetic paints that have reduced their pollution, such as water-based paints, which consist of synthetic paints that have changed their large amounts of solvent for water.

For a paint to be called ecological, it has to be totally free of toxins, petroleum derivatives and must not pollute the environment at all, not partially as this label assures.

To end this article we show you a video-summary of all the benefits of ecological paints that we have explained:
