The Málaga City Council, through the Environmental Sustainability Area, joined once again the celebration of World Environment Day, commemorated every June 5, with a program of educational and participatory activities held at the Historic Botanical Garden La Concepción.
In this context, RedVerde participated alongside FumiHogar in an educational event aimed at schoolchildren from various schools in the city, within the Pasaporte Verde environmental education program. The meeting aimed to bring sustainability, the circular economy, and the importance of waste valorization to younger generations in a practical, visual, and participatory way.
From RedVerde, we were part of one of the workshop stands, where we presented various materials and products linked to bioconstruction, resource reuse, and the circular economy. The main idea was simple but very important: to help children understand that many wastes that apparently have no value can become new raw materials if we learn to look at them differently.

Learning circular economy through practical challenges
The activity was designed as a pedagogical circuit with three stations, in which students solved small challenges related to everyday waste and its possible forms of valorization.
At the first station, dedicated to waste calculation, schoolchildren worked with math problems based on individual consumption to understand how small daily gestures can generate large amounts of waste on a global scale. Examples included waste such as coffee grounds, textile scraps, electronic waste, and pruning debris.
The second station focused on the hazard scale. Here, students analyzed the environmental impact of different types of waste and classified them according to their level of risk to the planet. This part of the workshop allowed reflection on the importance of reducing, separating, and properly managing waste, especially those that can have the greatest impact on the environment.

Finally, at the third station, dedicated to the circular economy and valorization, participants connected each waste item with possible solutions to transform it into a new resource. This was one of the most interesting parts of the activity, as it allowed explaining in a visual and understandable way how some materials can return to the productive cycle instead of ending up as waste.
From waste to resource: a new way of understanding materials
From RedVerde, we wanted to convey a key idea: the circular economy is not just about recycling, but about rethinking the value of materials from their origin.
In the field of bioconstruction, there are increasingly more solutions that leverage natural resources, agricultural byproducts, or organic waste to manufacture new materials with real applications in architecture, furniture, decoration, or sustainable construction.

Pruning debris, plant fibers, compost, olive pits, or agricultural byproducts can become useful components for developing new products, panels, finishes, furniture, or even construction solutions. Materials that were previously considered waste can become part of healthier, more efficient buildings that are respectful of the environment.
This idea connects directly with RedVerde’s philosophy: championing natural, sustainable materials that are coherent with a more responsible way of building.
FumiHogar and the ECOFFEE project: coffee grounds as raw material
During the event, FumiHogar also presented its ECOFFEE project, a European initiative that works on the valorization of coffee grounds to transform them into natural and sustainable biocides.

This example was especially interesting for schoolchildren because it starts from a very everyday waste: the coffee we consume every day. Through innovation, research, and the circular economy, an apparently simple waste can become a raw material with new valuable applications.
Projects like ECOFFEE help show that sustainability is not an abstract idea, but something that can be applied to real products, industrial processes, and concrete solutions to reduce environmental impact.

Environmental education to build a more conscious future
For RedVerde, participating in this type of initiative is a way to bring bioconstruction and sustainability to society from the ground up: through education.
The children not only learned concepts such as waste, valorization, or circular economy, but were able to touch them, relate them to real examples, and understand that the materials around us have a history, an origin, and also a possible second life.

We believe that building a sustainable future starts with asking simple questions:
- What happens to the waste we generate?
- Can we transform waste into a resource?
- How can we build and live in a way that is more respectful of the planet?
